Established in 2025, BAY TINE TANNERY is an artisanal microtannery in Devon producing 100% acorn-tanned leather from wild deer skins sourced in South-West England.

Here in the UK, we have a unique relationship with the six species of deer that roam wild in the landscape. With no natural predators, humans play a crucial role in trying to maintain balance with deer and other species in our ecosystems and also deer welfare.

Each deerskin tanned at Bay Tine is a product of wild deer population management that would otherwise be disposed of as waste. Instead, this incredible raw material is rescued and transformed into something beautiful, durable and functional.

The skins are tanned using traditional methods and natural materials, striving for amazing quality and a refined finished product.

The tannage itself is comprised 100% vegetable tannins. Specifically, the skins are tanned with valonea extract which is derived from acorns harvested from wild oak trees in Turkey.

The artisan deer leather produced at the tannery in Devon is transformed into thoughtfully designed and carefully handmade goods in Somerset.

With wild deer skins sourced, tanned and sewn in South West England, all Bay Tine Tannery products offer a truly sustainable, local and natural option.

Bay Tine Tannery is proudly helping to keep the endangered craft of vegetable tanning alive here in the UK.

Bay Tine Tannery is currently a humble team of... one! Founder Matt is passionate about ecology, craft and heritage, weaving all three together in Bay Tine Tannery.

Matt does not come from a direct tanning lineage or family, but has come to tanning through his passion about deer. He sees tanning as a way of being in relationship and kinship with the wild deer that roam in our landscape.
